SME stands for small and midsize/medium enterprises. As opposed to multinational conglomerates, SMEs are much smaller businesses that create most jobs across the world economy.

SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) account for 60 to 70 percent of jobs in most countries and the ratio of women to men in SMEs is quite poor.

In the effort of women to enter the SME sector, which was previously predominately male, women continue to face several obstacles.

WHY SMEs?

  • SMEs frequently have more operating flexibility. Large firms may be more challenging to act swiftly when their processes are more extensive and include more personnel.
  • SMEs frequently cultivate a stronger feeling of community. Slogans like “shop local” are meant to support SMEs that don’t have locations all over the country.
  • SMEs are more inclined to contribute to their own community financially. SMEs are more likely to remain local, support local businesses, pay local taxes, and source goods from close suppliers rather than raise money and open new stores across the nation.
  • SMEs, on the other hand, are more likely to uphold family customs, maintain past practices, and transmit the family business.

WOMEN and SME

Women entrepreneurs face various obstacles in developing nations, such as social, cultural, decision-making, and financial resource access. Being able to overcome these obstacles, however, presents an opportunity for them to be empowered and develop their entrepreneurial skills.

There is still untapped economic potential for women entrepreneurs and room for improvement in this area’s information and statistics, as well as in the funding, networks, and technological infrastructure. As a result, SMEs run by women have a great deal of promise for growth and innovation.
